Dear parents,
If you visit this website to read our classroom blog please send a note with your student or post a comment. Your child will get a trip to the treasure box. I am trying to find out if it's worth updating this site weekly, how often I should update this site, or if I should send information home in a newsletter monthly. Thank you for your help.

Spelling Words and updates for week of 8/16/2010
Dear parents,
The first full week went by very quickly and we have completed several tests. I am excited to be working with your students this year and I see the great potential for learning in each of them. It's going to be an exciting year of learning! We have seven subjects we are studying and they will learn a lot of new and exciting things. Please check their bags daily for homework or important information. Each day, at the end of the day, the students are sent by tables to collect from their mailbox. There is no reason why they should miss out on any information. Fridays you should always have spelling words, with phonograms on the back, in their folders. Following is a list of their spelling words and phonograms for this coming week. The pretest is on every Thursday and the final test is on Friday. Have them write each word daily and spell them to you daily. This prepares them for the tests. Thank you in advance for supporting your child in his/her learning experience.

A New Year
Dear parents and students,
Welcome to my class! Another summer has come and gone and we are refreshed and ready to learn and grow once again. I want to take a moment to invite you to the Meet the Teacher night on this coming Tuesday at 6 p.m. At that time I will have a packet for you. Below is a supply list for both my classroom and art. Please do not purchase White Board (dry erase) markers from the general list the school gave out. I have a surplus! :)
#2 pencils= 2 packages of 24 pencils each
1 pack of 8 basic crayons
2 reams of wide-ruled paper
1 folder for homework
2 large pink erasers ( not the pencil topper style)
1 pencil holder ( box or bag)
Mandatory water bottles
This is my list, we do not need glue sticks, rulers, or dry erase markers. If it is on the school list, please disregard their request for these items. Also, do not purchase duplicates if we have the same items listed on both lists. I am looking forward to meeting you and your child on Tuesday! See you then!

April 15th,2010 Class Update
Dear parents,
Thank you again for helping your students with their Social Studies projects. They did a wonderful job! We all enjoyed sharing our new knowledge and talents with each other. Our grand finale was a trio of reports on the state of Hawaii. We ate some foods from the islands, did the limbo, danced a little, and hammed it up for the camera. Mrs. Marlatt got lots of pictures of posters, maps, and the students enjoying themselves on our Hawaiian day. What fun! Thank you to the parents and administrators for showing interest and support by joining us to see the completed projects.
We completed our Terra Nova/Stanford 10 tests and next week we will be back on our regular schedule. The students will have regular reading classes, regular specialist times, and spelling words. The rest of the year will go by quickly. I am going to allow the students to do a week of Science Experiments the last week of May and I will send home information soon. It will not be graded and it is not mandatory. It's something they really want to do and since they did such a great job on the Social Studies projects they have proven that they are capable of exceeding the second grade standards. Also, they earned a pizza party and will enjoy that next week....on Thursday. It will not replace their regular lunch. It will be around 1:30 in the afternoon. Good job! A spelling list for next week will go home tomorrow and I will post it here as well.
Thank you,
Mrs. Marlatt

Classroom update for Week of April 5th, 2010
Dear Parents,
The most important news this week is that it is our last regular week of class before the state Stanford 10 test. It is very important that your student is in class before the bell rings each day next week. Please do not schedule appointments (if possible) so that your student will be present for the testing periods. Each student should arrive well-rested and ready to test. Healthy snacks are welcome on test days. Thank you, in advance, for your support.
Speaking of support...a big thank you goes out to all of the parents who have helped their student with their Social Studies project. This has been a big success! The students have enjoyed it as much as I have. Many parents have shared the fun stories of creating posters and maps with their child. Keep up the good work! The remaining reports will be given the rest of this week . Please bring in your maps and posters a day in advance.
We are testing for spelling words this week. Please have the student study each day for at least 15 minutes, in addition to the practice at school. Practice creates mastery. The words are listed below.

Spelling Words & Phonograms for week of March 8, 2010
Dear parents,
We have a busy week coming up. On Thursday we have Picture Day and on Friday we are going to the zoo. Please remember to send your child with a sack lunch from home. No sack lunches will be provided by our food service. In addition, please remember to work with your student on their Social Studies project that is due on March 29th. I have had a couple of parents who feel that this is homework for the parents. This should not be your project, parents. You may guide them, however, please do not do it for them. Assisting them in obtaining pictures from a state travel guide for their poster, finding their state's official website, and providing supplies for the poster and maps is necessary. If you want to assist them further and have fun with them, that is fine. The report should only be one or two pages long. The poster should be a full-sized poster sheet. If you have any questions please call the school and ask to speak with me. Have fun! I have done this nearly every year and my second grade classes have so much fun with it and they feel like it is their own, which makes them feel proud to show off all their hard work during the presentation week.

Supplies Needed
Dear parents,
Please send pencils each week for your student. We had a good supply at the beginning of the year, but they are going through two to four pencils (per student) each week and we are completely out of pencils at this point. Also, if you are able to donate paper (wide-ruled) I would appreciate it very much.
Thank you,
Mrs. Marlatt

Spelling Words & Phonograms for week of February 22nd, 2010
Dear parents,
As some of you have heard, we are embarking on an exciting Social Studies project. The students are pretty excited about this. On Monday I will send home more information, but let me give you a sneak-peek now. The students have each been assigned a particular state. The assignment consists of four parts. For the first part of the assignment the student will do research about the assigned state, then they will write a report or print a report from the computer. Please make sure they can read what they are reporting on or that they can remember what you read to them. The student will then collect pictures of things pertaining to that state and make a nice big poster. The best way to get pictures is by writing to the Visitors Bureau or Chamber of Commerce for that state. It takes about one week to ten days to receive the packet. Just have your student cut the pictures from the pamphlets and glue them on to the poster. Last of all they will make a relief map of their state using clay. I will send home a recipe for homemade clay or they may use modeling clay or Modeling Foam. Please do not use Playdoh. It crumbles before the day of their presentation. The entire project will be due in 4 weeks. I will give you a due date on Monday and more detailed information. When they are due the students will bring in the report, the poster, and their map to do their presentation. Parents will be able to come and assist or support their student on that day. We will take a full week to give the presentations. Have fun with your child as you learn about the state. They are very excited! This is a fun project and a great learning experience. More details later....

Valentine's Day Party Update
Dear parents,
We are still in need of 2 parent volunteers for February12th (Valentine Party) to help with crafts and passing out treats. We have had two parents who have notified me that they are bringing in something for the party. As of today, we do not need juice, plates, or napkins. However, all food items listed in an earlier blog (below) are still needed and appreciated. Thank you in advance for your contributions.

Valentine's Day-Valentine cards
Dear parents,
Some of the parents have asked how many students we have in our classroom in order to purchase Valentine cards. We have a total of 28 students. You are not required to purchase cards, it's just a fun option. Your students do not have to put names on their cards, however, if they are giving out cards they must have a card for every student so no one feels uncared for. We will be doing a fun craft and, if we have parents that are able to donate from the list on my previous blog, we will also have yummy treats. It will be a fun day! I still need a couple of parent volunteers, so if you would like to join in on the fun, let me know. The party begins at 1:00 on Friday, February 12th.

Valentine's Day Volunteers & Treats Needed
Dear parents,
I could really use your help. First of all, I will need 3 or 4 volunteers to help in the classroom on Valentine's Day. We will be doing a fun craft, handing out cards, and having treats. This tends to get very involved. :) Please let me know if you are willing to help. You will need to go to the front office and fill out a volunteer form and get your fingerprints ( $5.00) ahead of time. Also, please let me know if you are willing/able to bring treats. Here is a list of suggestions. Please remember that all treats must be from the store.
Vegetable Tray & Dip
Fruits
Crackers
Chips
Cupcakes
Cookies
Candies
Drinks in pouches
Plastic forks
napkins
* We have paper plates
Thank you in advance for your willingness to help our class to have a really special day. We hope to see you on Valentine's Day!

Are you a blog reader?
If you are reading this blog please send a brief note with your child to let me know. I will reward your student with a choice of some free time, a trip to the treasure box, or a special treat for them. I'm trying to see if the updates are reaching parents. Thank you for your help.

January Newsletter 2010
Dear Parents,
Welcome to 2010! We have a lot ahead of us so I just wanted to touch base on a few things. Since we are half way through the year there are some important things to talk about. First of all, we are in need of supplies. We need more pencils (most importantly), construction paper, and wide ruled paper as well. We are good on hand sanitizers and wipes.
Just a quick FYI, some parents called and expressed concern that their student did not bring home spelling words last Friday. I was in a car accident after work last Wednesday and was unable to return to work until yesterday. I was unable to copy the words until after school. The words were practiced in class, however, and a list will go home today.
This Friday, January 15th, is a half day and we are off on Monday, January 18th. Please, please, please make a note that Monday, January 25th, is the 100th day of school. This is a very important day for all of us and it's so important that your student be at school on that particular day. As an extra incentive, we will be celebrating the day with fun activities.
You may notice some changes over the next few months. During this week and next week our school will be busy with CBM (Curriculum-Based Measurements) tests. This means that we are not having reading groups, science, or social studies during those two weeks. We will be reviewing those subjects through special written activities, though. We will also begin preparing for Aims/Terra Nova testing very soon so that your student will be prepared for this important test. During our preparations we will refrain from dividing into math groups. Instead, we will have our own students and work on the areas they need help in.
Report cards are coming home on Friday, January 22nd, and if you have any questions please feel free to call. Even though we are not scheduled for parent conferences, I am willing to meet with any parent who would like to address their concerns. I am pleased that most of the students have all of their work completed, but concerned that some students came back from winter break with a very relaxed feeling, thinking that they didn't need to work as hard. This attitude will show in their grades. Please remind your student that school is very important and we are going to be working right up until school lets out for summer break.
Thank you to all of the parents who have indicated that they are willing to help on the field trip in March. I will get the volunteer forms out to you and send home more information as it becomes available. We are sorry that siblings are not able to go on the field trip with our classes. Grandparents who fill out the form and are fingerprinted are welcome to chaperone.
Thank you for your support. Have a terrific month!
